G2 Road Test Checklist: What to Bring and How to Prepare (Hamilton)
Booking a G2 road test in Ontario can feel like the biggest step in the whole process, but most of what determines a pass comes down to preparation you can control. Here’s what to have ready before test day, and what examiners are actually watching for.
What to bring
- Your G1 licence (the physical card, not a photo of it).
- Proof of your road test appointment (confirmation email or number).
- A vehicle that meets MTO requirements: valid plates, current insurance, a working seatbelt for every seat, and a secondary rear-view mirror for the examiner.
- Payment for the test fee, if it wasn’t paid online in advance.
If you’re training with an instructor, using the same car you learned in removes one more variable on test day. You already know how it brakes, how wide it turns, and where its blind spots sit.
What examiners actually mark you on
DriveTest examiners in Ontario are assessing whether you can drive independently and safely, not whether you’re perfect. The categories that trip up most G2 candidates:
- Observation: shoulder checks before every lane change, merge, and turn, not just mirror checks.
- Space management: following distance, and giving yourself room at intersections and stop signs.
- Speed control: matching posted limits and adjusting for conditions, not just staying under the number.
- Parking manoeuvres: parallel parking and a three-point turn are common, and both are about control, not speed.
The week before
Book a lesson or two in the days leading up to your test, specifically to drive the roads and manoeuvres you’re least confident on. If you’re testing at the Hamilton DriveTest centre, practising the actual routes examiners use (rather than only your regular neighbourhood) makes a measurable difference in how calm you feel behind the wheel on the day.
Nervous about test day?
That’s normal, and it’s the single most common thing new drivers tell us before their G2. A calm, patient instructor who’s run through the exact routes with you beforehand takes a lot of that pressure off.
