G2 to Full G in Ontario: How Long It Takes and What's Different
Ontario’s graduated licensing system means new drivers move through G1, G2, and G in stages, each with its own waiting periods and test. Here’s how the G2-to-G stage works, and what changes for the road test itself.
The waiting period
Once you pass your G2 road test, Ontario requires a minimum waiting period before you’re eligible to take the G test, typically 12 months, or 8 months if you complete an approved driver education course. Check current MTO requirements before booking, since program details can change.
What’s different about the G test
The G2 test focuses on core control and safety: observation, signalling, parking, and basic manoeuvres in mixed traffic. The G test builds on that with:
- Highway driving, including merging, lane changes at higher speed, and maintaining safe following distance at 80-100+ km/h.
- More complex intersections and traffic patterns.
- Night or reduced-visibility judgment, in the sense that examiners expect you to already be comfortable with the situations, even if the test itself is scheduled in daylight.
- Overall independence: by this stage, examiners expect decision-making that looks less like following instructions and more like driving the way a licensed driver actually would.
Why the gap matters
The waiting period isn’t just a formality. Most new drivers only get comfortable with highway merging, higher-speed lane changes, and long-distance judgment after months of regular driving on their G2. Booking a few refresher lessons in the weeks before your G test, specifically focused on highway driving if you haven’t done much of it, closes that gap quickly.
Getting ready for your G
If it’s been a while since your G2 and you want to knock the rust off, or you never got comfortable on the highway, a handful of focused lessons usually does it. We tailor full G prep around exactly what you need rather than a fixed curriculum.
